YMCA Y Story by Marco Espino
“I became a day camp counselor to try something new. It was something I had not considered doing before and was also my first job. I saw it as a way to keep my summer entertaining and test my abilities to work with children. It was such an experience I’ll never regret because it expanded my level of comfort in working with teams but also as a leader and instructor for youth.
I would definitely recommend prospective counselors to apply to the Rauner Ymca because it was an adventurous experience to work with different age groups. It allowed me to gain programming experience and also leadership skills that are applicable in different work settings beyond working as a Camp counselor. A lot of these kids are from the community, which is often underserved in terms of resources and education, so being able to provide them with a great summer experience is really motivating and influential for both the counselor and the camper.
My favorite field trip was the waterpark in Joliet watersplash! It felt so great to feel refreshed after long hot summer days, and we got to buy ice cream at the end before the bus picked us up. Also although it was supposed to be the most challenging and dangerous trip, it ended being the most manageable and memorable!
Future advice for campers: be ready to be physically active throughout all of our activities. Remember to always bring your water bottle, sunscreen and energy for a great summer! It is important to drink lots of water, wear comfortable summer clothes and always listen to the counselors to ensure your safety.
