YMCA Early Learning Programs Promote Water Safety with Swim Lessons

At the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, our Early Learning programs prioritize your child’s safety — not just in our classrooms but also when they’re exploring the world around them! Safety in and around the water is essential, especially for children making new discoveries.

We’re pleased to offer swim lessons when instructors are available for our Early Learning program participants at the Fry Family YMCA, Sage YMCA, and Buehler YMCA. This is part of our continued dedication to promoting critical life skills. Additionally, the Indian Boundary YMCA Early Learning program offers unstructured pool time, allowing your child to familiarize themselves with the water in a safe and fun environment.

“By offering swim lessons during the day, the Y sets itself apart from other early learning programs,” said Stephanie Kuzelis, Vice President of Early Learning, YMCA of Metro Chicago. “This unique approach not only promotes physical fitness and water safety but also enriches children’s overall development in a fun and engaging environment. It is also a benefit for parents to have this built into their child’s day, freeing up time in the evenings.”

Learning to swim is an essential skill for children! The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States. Each year, there are over 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths nationwide.

“The Y incorporates water safety lessons into every swim program, ensuring that children not only learn swimming skills but also vital safety practices, such as floating, treading water, and recognizing danger,” said Lindsay Montgomery, Association Director of Aquatics, YMCA of Metro Chicago. “By emphasizing water safety in each lesson, the Y helps children build confidence in the water and equips them with the skills needed to stay safe. While supervision remains key, the Y’s commitment to water safety is playing a crucial role in reducing drowning incidents and providing parents with peace of mind.”

Through our swim experience at these select Y Community Hubs, we not only ensure the safety of our youngest community members, but we also promote a healthy lifestyle, coordination, and confidence. Plus, swimming fosters social interaction, building connections through shared activities with their peers!
