YMCA and Kent State University Collaborate on Community-Centered Design Project
In September of this year, the YMCA hosted students from Kent State University’s College of Architecture & Environmental Design, bringing their design talents to Chicago to envision a vibrant, community-driven space within Assemble Chicago. This annual partnership provides students with the opportunity to learn firsthand about the YMCA’s mission and the impact of community engagement on the built environment.
The highlight of the program was a panel discussion, hosted at the Crown Family YMCA, that focused on the role of community input in designing safe and functional public spaces. Moderated by Scott Hurst, Principal and Design Director at Gensler, the panel brought together industry leaders and community advocates to share insights with the students.
Panelists included Perry Strong, Design II at Studio Gang; Julia Mosqueda, Associate AIA and Project Designer at LBBA; and Maya Bird-Murphy, Executive Director of Mobile Makers.
The panelists emphasized the importance of involving community members in the design process, showcasing how spaces can be transformed when they reflect the needs and desires of the people who will use them. By promoting community voice, the YMCA continues its work in fostering inclusivity, safety, and accessibility in its programs and developments.
In addition to the panel, the students were treated to a tour of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) on September 17. Kimshasa Baldwin, OPC’s Director of Design, led the tour, offering invaluable insights into the Center’s design philosophy and its alignment with community values.
This event also provided the Y with an opportunity to spotlight some of its exciting projects, including the upcoming West Garfield Park YMCA (located in the Sankofa Village Wellness Center) and the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s Illinois Works workforce development program. Both initiatives underscore the Y's commitment to community-driven growth and collective impact.
The Y would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the panelists and moderator, Scott Hurst, for their time and insights, as well as the Obama Foundation for their generosity in hosting this year’s tour.
This collaboration between the YMCA of Metro Chicago, Kent State University, and Assemble Chicago reflects the power of design in shaping communities. It’s more than creating buildings; it’s about building connections and fostering a sense of belonging!
