The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago And Nike Team Up To Unveil Refurbished South Side Basketball Court
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago recently teamed up with NIKE, Inc. to refurbish the South Side YMCA’s outdoor basketball court and celebrate women in basketball. HER Court, designed by local artist Crystal Zapata, sits on the South Side Y’s property at 63rd and Stony Island and is available for use by the public.
“Through Nike’s partnership and generosity, the South Side Y and our neighbors have a beautiful new safe space to gather, to play, and to find joy in community and sports,” said Kenne’quia Howell, Executive Director, South Side YMCA. “It was such a privilege to be able to unveil this work of art and then spend the day celebrating local women’s achievements in music, food, art, community, and, of course, basketball!”
As part of the court’s unveiling, the YMCA community, local officials, notable Chicago sports figures, and more gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, July 9. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Chicago community was invited to “Celebrate HER” and participate in on-site activities and fanfare spotlighting women. The all-day party included food, friendship, and festivity.
Girls ages 8-17 and boys ages 13-17 participated in free skills sessions throughout the day coached by WNBA star Linnae Harper. Local female DJs Sky Jetta and Ca$h Era spun tracks to set the vibe. Food and drink were furnished by female-owned eateries. Additional community fun included flogos, misting stations, and lots of giveaway swag.
