South Side YMCA Fitness Spotlight with Fitness Director DeAntae Sturghill
At the South Side YMCA, we know that fitness is more than just a work-out — it’s also endurance, confidence, and support! That’s why our programs are mindfully designed to meet the needs of every individual, no matter your age or skill level. We meet you where you are, so you can meet your goals.
South Side Y Fitness Director DeAntae Sturghill recently spoke with us about his journey at the YMCA and what sets our fitness programming apart.
What inspired you to become a fitness director at the YMCA?
My background stems from customer service and engagement, with over 15 years of experience in the field. I've been involved in the fitness industry for seven years, specializing in group fitness classes. I was inspired to become the fitness director for the YMCA because I wanted to inspire, make a change, and create a sense of community in the neighborhood I live in.
What’s a typical day like for you as a fitness director at the YMCA?
A typical day includes teaching a class or two, training clients, and engaging with members and guests throughout the building.
What sets the fitness programs at the South Side YMCA apart from other gyms or community centers?
The South Side YMCA’s sense of community and family-style environment truly sets us apart.
How do you ensure that the fitness classes are inclusive and accessible to all members of the community?
We ensure our classes are inclusive by fostering a sense of belonging. We engage with everyone we come into contact with, always treating them with respect and love.
What’s your favorite success story from a member who has participated in your fitness programs?
One of my favorite success stories involves a married couple who started by coming to the Y a few times a week. After joining an 8-week challenge, they became more engaged, taking classes and getting involved in everything we do here at the South Side YMCA.
What new classes or programs can members look forward to this fall?
This fall, we’re introducing boxing classes, a glute camp, and some weight loss challenges.
What are the key benefits of movement and exercise that you think people often overlook?
People often overlook the fact that movement can happen anywhere, using anything. It’s accessible in ways we don’t always think about.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about starting their fitness journey?
I would advise them to give themselves grace. Don’t be intimidated by others — they were once beginners too.
How do you keep your fitness programming relevant and engaging for all ages and fitness levels?
We meet people where they are, both physically and mentally, while maintaining a fun and inviting environment.
What role do fitness instructors play in motivating and supporting members?
Fitness instructors are key to motivating and supporting members. I like to think of us as the therapists of movement and exercise.
How does the YMCA’s approach to fitness go beyond just physical exercise?
The YMCA creates a sense of community that extends beyond physical exercise. People form lifelong friendships and feel like family.
