Recap: Team YMCA at the 2024 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago was proud to partner with Susan G. Komen® for the 2024 Komen Race for the Cure!
Last month, more than 30 members of Team Y walked in or volunteered at the race at Soldier Field. Our team, the “Your Mighty Cancer Avengers” (a.k.a. YMCA!) not only participated in the Race for the Cure 5K, but they also raised nearly $3,500 for cancer research and patient support. That’s more than twice our original team goal!
Funds will go toward discovering more effective cancer treatments; helping patients access breast cancer screenings, diagnostics, and treatment assistance; and so much more. Together, we played a part in helping to end breast cancer.
"Every 12 minutes, a woman in the U.S. dies from breast cancer,” said Danielle Carey, Manager of Interviewing - Talent Acquisition, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. “Experts say one-third of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. could be prevented with universal access to modern treatments.... My Aunt Pam passed away in November 2016 from breast cancer. In an effort to keep her legacy alive and help save others, it’s important to me to continue to raise awareness and do what I can to help other people.”
Additionally, the YMCA of Metro Chicago volunteered throughout the event. About a dozen volunteers helped with tabling efforts, which included running a vertical jump challenge for the chance to enter a raffle. Volunteers also helped share the benefits of the YMCA by handing out free Play Passes and information about the Y’s programs and services.
Thank you to everyone who joined the Y at this event and helped us support our community members affected by breast cancer. Additional thanks to those who showed up in other ways — whether it was through a generous contribution or an online shoutout!
