RECAP: Pay it Forward MLK Day of Service at the Kelly Hall YMCA

On January 20, 2025, the Kelly Hall YMCA was filled with an incredible spirit of generosity and community as volunteers gathered for the annual Pay It Forward MLK Day of Service. In collaboration with the Alpha Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., we set out to assemble 125 housing kits for individuals transitioning into stable housing and 500 blessing bags for those who are unhoused. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors, we exceeded our goal — packing 530 blessing bags and 125 housewarming baskets! 

This initiative, which began in 2018 as a small group project, has grown into a signature event that continues to attract more volunteers each year. It was truly inspiring to witness the community come together, dedicating their time and resources to support our neighbors in need. 

Volunteers assembled blessing bags included essentials like hats, gloves, hand warmers, and hygiene products, while the housewarming baskets were packed with towels, detergent, and other household necessities. These items were donated to the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Facing Forward, and Phoenix Foundation, organizations committed to supporting individuals experiencing housing insecurity. 

As Tequilla Lopez and Adekemi Dosunmu, the event’s 2025 chairs, shared in their message of gratitude: "It takes a village, and we are proud to have you as a part of ours. Through your marketing support and donation of space, we were able to pack 530 blessing bags and 125 housewarming baskets. We were very proud to donate these items to the Y, Facing Forward, and Phoenix Foundation, as a small way to support the hard work that is done to eliminate homelessness in the Chicagoland area." 

We extend our heartfelt thank you to every volunteer, donor, and partner who made this event a success. Your kindness and dedication make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Let’s continue the spirit of service beyond this day because together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.
