Lake View YMCA Fitness Spotlight with Fitness Director Bertrand Coubé

At the Lake View YMCA, we know that fitness is more than just a workout — it’s also endurance, confidence, and support! That’s why our programs are mindfully designed to meet the needs of every individual, no matter your age or skill level. We meet you where you are, so you can meet your goals.

Lake View Y Fitness Director Bertrand Coubé recently spoke with us about his journey at the YMCA and what sets our fitness programming apart.

Can you share your background and what inspired you to become a fitness director at the YMCA?
I have a background in athletics, kickboxing, and bodybuilding. Becoming a fitness director was a natural evolution after working as a personal trainer, lead personal trainer, floor attendant, and fitness manager.

Also, when I was studying for my master's degree in Classic Philosophy in France, I was always fascinated on how the ancient Greeks cultivated their bodies and minds equally in order to be “balanced and accomplished.” I believe this is the “mantra” that led me to become a fitness director, helping my community reach that body and soul balance I’ve been working on my whole life.

What sets the fitness programs at the YMCA apart from other gyms or community centers?
I believe the high level of professionalism and safety is really something unique at the Lake View Y. We make sure everyone is following an appropriate assessment process in order to make dramatic gains in a safe space, which is something I never observe in other gyms.

How do you ensure that the fitness classes are inclusive and accessible to all members of the community?
Accessibility and inclusivity are the key words to building a strong community. When we are designing our programs, we are always asking ourselves questions, like “how do we make it achievable for everyone, whether they’re 15 or 85 years old” or “what are possible adaptations to make so that everyone can perform and progress?” Additionally, quick and personal assessments are a key point.

What’s your favorite success story from a member who has participated in your fitness programs?
I have many to tell, but the story about Joe is one I cherish. Joe was a retired French teacher with advanced Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's. We worked together for three years, fighting against his conditions and were able to observe many mobility progressions while working on his memory. For example, we counted his reps in French. Helping Joe fight against these challenging conditions was a heartfelt and powerful reminder of my mission at the YMCA.

How do you incorporate feedback from members to improve the fitness offerings at your YMCA?
Since I’ve been at the Y for more than six years, I personally know a large number of our members and, in addition to email suggestions, I always ask members for feedback on the floor and listen for the “greater common denominator” to act appropriately.

How do you foster a sense of community and support within your fitness classes?
I create a professional and friendly relationship with our members and always try to listen and ask questions to increase the quality of our services.

What are the key benefits of movement and exercise that you think people often overlook?
One of the most common myths we have to debunk is that “senior citizens should not lift heavy weights.” It’s the opposite! The more we age, the less muscle and bone density we have. To fight back, the more we age, the heavier we should lift. Of course, all lifting should be done in a safe and professional environment, and personal assessments during wellness orientation and personal training sessions are key.

Can you describe how your fitness programs impact the health and wellbeing of the local community?
Our fitness programs are designed to make sure we are appropriately targeting all possible demographics in a positive manner with a wide variety of options, including cardio, weightlifting, spin classes, mobility, stretching, dancing, yoga, Tai Chi, and soon, Les Mills Bodycombat. We are always monitoring our community members’ needs and wishes.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about starting their fitness journey?
Starting a fitness journey is a positive life changer on many levels: muscular, cardio, mental, and psychological. It’s an adventure in our own personal uncharted territory, and you will discover who you truly are.

Y members, come book a free wellness consultation with me, and let’s start together!

How do you keep your fitness programming relevant and engaging for all ages and fitness levels?
We offer a wide variety of different programs and interact with members of all ages and levels.

What role do fitness instructors play in motivating and supporting members?
Fitness instructors and personal trainers are the essential link to motivating members. Their constant dynamism and positivity are key at the Lake View Y.

How does the YMCA’s approach to fitness go beyond just physical exercise?
Wellness is a “package.” We implement diet and nutritional aspects, combined with physical exercises, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to design “health and wellness programs,” which would incorporate essential nutritional aspects.

At the Y, we also consider fitness to be an overall positive lifestyle choice, which is more than running on a treadmill or lifting a dumbbell. Fitness is also a way to be a part of a huge positive and diverse community of “fitness fellows.”
