Fry Family YMCA Fitness Spotlight with Fitness Director Lynn Martinez
At the Fry Family YMCA, we know that fitness is more than just a work-out — it’s also endurance, confidence, and support! That’s why our programs are mindfully designed to meet the needs of every individual, no matter your age or skill level. We meet you where you are, so you can meet your goals.
Fry Family Y Fitness Director Lynn Martinez recently spoke with us about her journey at the YMCA and what sets our fitness programming apart.
Can you share your background and what inspired you to become a fitness director at the YMCA?
I have been in fitness for decades. I was at a nearby YMCA for 10 years before coming to the Fry Family YMCA. I transferred to this Y because I was offered the opportunity to oversee the fitness department here!
What’s a typical day like for you as a fitness director at the YMCA?
BUSY! I am teaching, training, doing community service, in meetings, and making sure our program runs as smoothly as possible for members and staff.
What sets the fitness programs at the YMCA apart from other gyms or community centers?
We have a wide variety of classes and instructors, at various times throughout the day, that other facilities do not offer.
How do you ensure that the fitness classes are inclusive and accessible to all members of the community?
I made sure when I started that we not only offered regular and senior classes, but that we were also all showing modifications in our classes for different skill levels and have some “basic” classes on our schedule for beginners.
What’s your favorite success story from a member who has participated in your fitness programs?
I have way too many to name, but my favorites are always when a member ends up loving fitness as much as I do.
How do you incorporate feedback from members to improve the fitness offerings at your YMCA?
I take all feedback, positive and negative, to heart, and adjust where there needs to be adjustments.
What new classes or programs can members look forward to this fall?
We are currently in the midst of Halloween Fitness Bingo and a Triathlon Challenge that all members can participate in.
What are the key benefits of movement and exercise that you think people often overlook?
Form is very important!
Can you describe how your fitness programs impact the health and wellbeing of the local community?
We make exercise fun and challenging! Our classes help both the body and the mind!
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about starting their fitness journey?
The hardest part is the beginning. Make a date with yourself to work out every day and find an exercise regime you love.
How do you keep your fitness programming relevant and engaging for all ages and fitness levels?
All our instructors have continuing education that keeps them up to date on current trends.
What role do fitness instructors play in motivating and supporting members?
The instructor's job is to give a great workout and to make people feel like they accomplished something while having a good time!
