Embark on an unforgettable journey at YMCA Camp Independence, where confidence, friendships, and self-reliance grow. We teach lifelong skills, a love for nature, and the development of healthy practices and meaningful relationships for campers with spina bifida — all amidst the fun of traditional camp activities. All of our programs promote confidence and cooperation and, best of all, are loads of fun!

At Camp Independence, we strive to make adventure accessible for all of our campers, providing them with an environment where they can be successful!. Most importantly, the camp offers them a safe, welcoming atmosphere where they can have fun!

    Youth & Teen Overnight Camp

    Campers foster lasting friendships while playing sports, creating arts and crafts, singing around the campfire, paddling a boat, and more. As this may be the first chance for many campers to spend a night away from home, our Youth sessions (ages 7 to 13) and Teen sessions (ages 14 to 19) encourage our intrepid explorers to become active participants in their own care and their continued development of independence.

    Adult Overnight Camp

    Camp Independence empowers all campers to tap into their inner adventurers — no matter how many years they have under their belt! Our Adult sessions (ages 20+) offer all of the fun of a traditional camp experience for older campers while building a place where independence and confidence flourish. We celebrate each unique journey, foster connections, and encourage campers’ personal growth, all amist fun camp activities.

Every year, Camp Independence provides a safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment to every camper. Your investment ensures that the Y has the resources it needs to care for the children, families, and communities we are privileged to serve, including providing scholarships to campers in financial need. 

Each fall, Camp Independence gathers stakeholders from across the Midwest to join together for our Annual Gala. This event alone raises well over half of the funds needed to ensure no camper is turned away due to inability to pay.

Thanks to generous donors, most campers attend Camp Independence for a fraction of the actual cost of camp, ensuring every child has the opportunity to attend, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
