Representative Mike Zalewski Receives the 2018 Legislative Hero Award

The Legislative Hero Award is presented to members of the Illinois General Assembly who have helped forward the YMCA mission in the community.  The Y is committed to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Executive Director Jill Anderson of the Greater LaGrange Y and former Executive Director Karen Dzaigwa (now of the Leaning Tower Y), nominated Representative Zalewski because of his continually support of the Greater LaGrange Y's Annual Fundraiser, the Reindeer Run.  Representative Zalewski has contributed to and participated in the Reindeer Run for the last 8 years.

The Greater LaGrange YMCA is all inclusive organization and believes that no one should be turned away for an inablity to pay. As a result we provide numerous scholarships every year to children, individuals, and families so they can attend summer camp, participate in programs, and benefit from a YMCA membership. Not only does he contribute to the Reindeer Run but Representative Zalewski has secured sponsorships from other organizations to support our scholarship fund and the Special Olympics bowling and swim teams that the Greater LaGrange YMCA sponsors.

Jill and Karen presented Representative Zalewski with the award at the Annual YMCA Advocacy Day in Springfield on April 18 on behalf of the Illinois State Alliance of YMCAs.
