The Y at the 94th Annual Bud Billiken Parade
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago had a fantastic time celebrating Black excellence and welcoming the back-to-school season at the 2023 Bud Billiken Parade and Festival on Saturday, August 12!
For the second year in a row, the Y community participated in the largest African American parade in the country. We were joined by our partners at Wilson and Target this year as we traveled down the parade route, handing out slap bracelets, mini basketballs, and delicious treats.
“It’s always such a pleasure to be surrounded by members of our community as we celebrate education, joy, and health and wellbeing at ‘the Bud,’” said Dorri McWhorter, President & CEO, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. “Bud Billiken is an event and partnership that our staff, members, and communities treasure, and we look forward to participating again for many years to come!”
Additionally, the Y hosted a booth at the post-parade festival in Washington Park, where we connected with our community and shared swag, sports drinks (it was a hot one that day!), and information about the South Side YMCA’s programs and upcoming events.
“There’s no better way to promote the Y’s mission of connecting all people to their purpose, potential, and each other than to meet our neighbors and friends at the biggest community celebration of the year,” said Jarquetta Egeston, Executive Director, South Side YMCA. “On behalf of the South Side Y, many thanks to everyone who came out to see us and to support us. We appreciate you!”
At the YMCA of Metro Chicago, we strive to empower our community, and that starts with investing in our youth, whether it’s through preschool, sports programs, or our core community services. As the school year kicks off, check out all the fun events, activities, and programs that your local YMCA has to offer.
Y staff, friends, and partners who participated in the parade wore a special limited-edition Bud Billiken Parade YMCA t-shirt. It’s not too late to get your own! For a limited time, anyone who supports the Y with a donation of $30 or more will receive one as a token of appreciation for their investment.
