The Sankofa Wellness Village has been Awarded the Chicago Prize!

The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is overjoyed to learn that the Pritzker Traubert Foundation has awarded The Chicago Prize to the Sankofa Wellness Village! We remain honored to be a part of this collaborative, community-led initiative that will create trusted, safe, comfortable, culturally-empowering spaces and services in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

With this capital investment, our cohort expects to break ground on the first phase of the development by the end of 2023, with doors opening in 2025. Upon its completion, the Wellness Village will include primary care, childcare, youth enrichment, fitness programming, mental health services, workforce development, a business incubator, a community-led credit union, and a community-owned grocery store. These services, spaces, and more will be primarily housed in a 60,000 square foot facility that will serve tens of thousands of community members annually. 

As a partner in the Sankofa Wellness Village, the YMCA thanks the Pritzker Traubert Foundation for this generous gift. We are grateful to all of our partners, community members, and staff for their dedication, support, and past and future efforts in this endeavor. The Y looks forward to providing updates on the progress of this essential effort toward a healthier, safer, more hopeful future for the West Side of Chicago.
